Defragment a Hard Disk

Solid State Drives

Computers that use Solid State Drives should NOT be defragmented. Defragmenting a solid state drive will drastically reduce the life span of the drive and cause it to fail much sooner. If you are not sure whether or not your computer has a solid state drive, contact the CIS HelpDesk or a computer repair professional before proceeding.

Defragment a Hard Disk

  1. Open the Start Menu and click All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Disk Defragmenter.

  2. Select one or more disks. Click Analyze Disk to determine whether or not a defragmentation operation should run. Click Defragment Disk to run the defragmentation operation.

  3. Click Stop Operation at any time to stop defragmenting or analyzing the disk.

Defragmenting a disk that is highly fragmented can take hours at a time. CIS recommends leaving a computer that is defragmenting unattended while it is defragmenting so it has complete access to system resources while the operation is running.
